2017 Sydney Cup Rescheduled

April 11th, 2017

ATC Chief Executive Darren Pearce has confirmed that the 2017 Sydney Cup (3200m) will be re-run on April 22nd at Royal Randwick, after it was abandoned mid-race on Day 2 of The Championships last weekend.

Fourteen stayers lined up at Randwick for the initial running of the Sydney Cup, however stewards were forced to cancel the race mid-contest after Almoonqith and Who Shot Thebarman were involved in an incident, causing the former to break down in the middle of the track.

While conceding that the tragic circumstances that occurred during the initial running of the 2017 Sydney Cup did not sit well with some pundits, Pearce told AAP that the ATC are delighted to be able to run the featured staying race on a new card; carrying the same lucrative $2 million prize pool.

“We wanted to give all entrants a chance to compete for the $2 million and we believe 22 April strikes a balance between varying views of owners and trainers, whilst achieving a competitive field size for punters and racegoers,” Pearce said.

Supplementary entries into the 2017 Sydney Cup field have been opened, with horses like three-year-old Lasqueti Spirit set to join the re-running of the race on Saturday week.

Racing NSW Chief Executive Peter V’landys said that the re-running of the Sydney Cup a fortnight after its scheduled date is a fair outcome for all runners, connections and trainers.

“We believe running the Sydney Cup two weeks after the no-race is the fairest outcome for all participants with those included in the no-race to receive compensatory payments,” he said.

The Charlie Appleby-trained Polarisation and Penglai Pavilion were first and third past the post on the weekend and are both in the mix to contest the re-scheduled 2017 Sydney Cup, as is second placegetter Chance To Dance.
