A Group 1 winner in his native France, Gallante clearly require a couple of runs to find condition and account for the Australian way of going upon debuting for Robert Hickmott in 2015, but produced a gutsy effort to finish sixth in the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) on October 3rd.

Resuming this time for eleventh in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) on February 13th, the Montjeu entire clearly relished a step-up in distance when third in the Group 3 NE Manion Cup (2400m) on March 19th.

Allocated the outside barrier, Gallante has been confirmed to be partnered by Kerrin McEvoy and should lay a great account for himself with only 51.5kgs in tow.

Former race favourite Libran has continued to drift in Sydney Cup betting markets despite winning the Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) last weekend, and is now sole occupant of the second line at a quote of $3.70.

Libran has more than stamped himself as a serious staying prospect for Chris Waller this season and will be tough to beat in the Sydney Cup from barrier 3, with regular hoop Brenton Avdulla in the saddle.

Running fourth in the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) on February 20th, Libran returned to winning form in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m); also winning the NE Manion Cup on his way to the Chairman’s Handicap.

Consistent stayer Who Shot Thebarman has continued to herald plenty of interest in 2016 Sydney Cup betting markets this week and has firmed into outright $3.50 favouritism.

Who Shot Thebarman is a Group 1 winner at the distance having taken out the 2014 edition of the Auckland Cup, and has continued to compete notably over two miles having finished third in the Melbourne Cup and second in last year’s Sydney Cup.

Tuning up in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) upon resuming this time, the Yamanin Vital gelding charged home to finish third in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) before running a close second in the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) last time out.

Interestingly only one other runner; reigning champion Grand Marshal ($4.20) is currently available at 2016 Sydney Cup odds of less-than $10.
