Talented import Libran has received a 2kg penalty for the 2016 Sydney Cup on Day 2 of The Championships following another impressive win in Saturday’s Group 3 NE Manion Cup (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens.
Libran was purchased and transferred to the care of Chris Waller with the view towards contesting Australia’s headline staying races and has already justified the decision in positing two wins and a minor through only five competitive starts.
Having savaged the line for success in the NE Manion Cup, Waller is confident the horse will only continue to improve on his way to the Sydney Cup 2016, which will likely include one more stop in the Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m).
“A European stayer like him needs a little bit of confidence and that is what he has now,” Waller said after Saturday’s race.
“He has two good wins and he is heading in the right direction, which is what you want from a horse going towards the Sydney Cup.
“He is still a little bit keen in his races and I am keen to run him again before the Sydney Cup in the Chairman’s.
“That will just give him a little bit more fitness and help him settle a little bit better.”
Libran has been a strong and consistent performer through his entire racing career so far having claimed a total of seven wins and two minors in seventeen starts since debuting in 2014.
Making a credible transition to the Australian way of going when sixth in the Swisse Wellness BM90 (1800m) on November 5th, the Lawman gelding resumed in February for third in the Gardenia Handicap (1600m).
Running a pleasing fourth in the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) at Rosehill on February 20th, Libran charged home to win the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) in his only other start prior to the NE Manion Cup.
Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2016 Sydney Cup odds, for which Libran can be taken at a quote of $5 for success.
