2016 Sydney Cup the Target for Our Ivanhowe

Trainer Lee Freedman was thrilled with the results posted and form displayed by Our Ivanhowe through the recent Spring Carnival, and is confident the general conditions in Sydney through the 2016 Autumn Carnival will make for an even more convincing preparation of performances.

Our Ivanhowe was a standout performer in his native Germany prior to arriving in the care of Lee and brother Anthony Freedman partway through 2015 and steadily built to the task through a competitive spring campaign; concluding with a luckless tenth in the Melbourne Cup when squeezed against the rails in the final straight.

Freedman told Racing Ahead the Soldier Hollow entire has taken plenty of benefit from his time away from racing and believes the conditions in Sydney will prove ideal for the horse to target a race like the 2016 Sydney Cup (3200m) on Day 2 of The Championships.

“We were delighted with the horse in the spring,” Freedman said.

“We didn’t get the win we were so keen to get but from where he was in the autumn and the beginning of the spring he made such improvement.

“Immeasurable improvement in terms of his benchmark rating and his international rating.

“It just showed the horse was beginning to acclimatise and was improving with each race.

“He had a nice spell and he looks in great nick – his feet have certainly improved a lot. I think with this imported horses that’s always an issue.

“Heading into an autumn when Sydney hopefully gets a little bit of that wet weather it generally does and it will play into his court because he’s a terrific horse with sting out of the ground.”

Our Ivanhowe has posted an impressive five wins and two minors through only 15 career starts since first appearing at the races in 2012.

Debuting to Australian racing for seventh in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville in May last year, Our Ivanhowe returned in spring for ninth in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m); progressing to second in the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2520m) and third in the Group 1 Caulfield  Cup (2400m) prior to the Melbourne Cup.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2016 Sydney Cup odds, for which Our Ivanhowe can be taken at a quote of $10 for success.
