Grand Marshal Posts Upset 2015 Sydney Cup Win

April 11th, 2015

Trainer Chris Waller has saddled an impressive quinella at Randwick this afternoon as rank outsider Grand Marshal poked clear of stable mate Who Shot Thebarman to win the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on Day 2 of The Championships.

Jumping from the gates only fairly, veteran jockey Jim Cassidy settled the five-year-old at the tail of the field of eleven, allowing Hartnell, Don Doremo and Au Revoir to set a reasonable tempo away from the barriers and past the post the first time.

Remaining in a comfortable position on the fence and finding a good rhythm, Cassidy remained calm on the Dansili gelding approaching the bend and rounding onto the final straight before settling in as a passenger as Grand Marshal quickly spooled up and charged forward; storming home down the outside and locking in a fierce sprint with his stable mate along the rails before breaking through for a win at the highest level; a brave Like A Carousel boxing on for third.

Cassidy was thrilled to return to the Group 1 winner’s circle aboard Grand Marshal in the 2015 Sydney Cup, crediting the win to the fortitude of his talented mount and Waller in preparation the horse.

“Great thrill,” Cassidy said after crossing the line.

“I think I’ve only had about six rides on him for three wins and now a Sydney Cup.

“I got skittled a bit early so I went to Plan B and went back; I was going to go forward.

“I was very confident he didn’t run the trip, a couple of gear changes and a jockey change – a few little things help!”

Waller was elated with his 2015 Sydney Cup quinella and was particularly impressed with the late charged produced by Grand Marshal wide in the final straight.

“Obviously the favourite (Hartnell) was in front and he looked to be travelling quite comfortably in a good rhythm so I thought gee he’s going to be hard to beat.

“I could see Who Shot Thebarman getting a dream run following Protectionist and then coming up on his inside which is the place to be today.

“Then to see him (Grand Marshal) storm home down the outside, it was pretty good.

“It’s a great feeling when you win any race but when you come to the Sydney Cup it’s something special when the two stable mates fight it out.”

Punters who backed Grand Marshal to win the 2015 Sydney Cup with have been paid out on generous $41 for success!
