Two Miles No Issue for Big Memory in 2015 Sydney Cup

April 10th, 2015

Talented stayer Big Memory has returned to typically competitive form this season but will step up to two miles for the first time in Saturday’s Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick.

Posting four wins and a further ten minor place finishes through his 23 career starts so far, Big Memory began his racing career abroad in Germany before being transferred to the care of Tony McEvoy at the conclusion of his 2012 campaign.

Big Memory undoubtedly posted his career-best result to date when taking out the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) during the 2014 Spring Carnival; beating to the line a talented field including the likes of Melbourne Cup hero Protectionist, who has also been confirmed for Saturday’s Sydney Cup.

Having initially targeted the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) in 2014 before fading in form, McEvoy is confident Big Memory is a far-greater horse and finds the Sydney Cup in peak condition.

“We tried him over 3200 metres in the Adelaide Cup last year but he is a better horse now,” McEvoy told AAP.

“The distance is a query and it is the strongest Sydney Cup for a number of years but it will determine where I go with him in the spring.

“He was one outside the field for the Melbourne Cup and yet he got into the Caulfield Cup.”

Having ended his 2014 campaign second in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) and third in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m), Big Memory returned this time for a credible fourth in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) on February 14th.

Progressing to third in the Listed Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) a fortnight later, the Duke Of Marmalade gelding failed to fire when beating just one runner home in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) but responded well in placing a close second in the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) on March 28th.

Allocated the rails draw, Big Memory will carry just 52kgs in the 2015 Sydney Cup and has been confirmed to be partnered by Glen Boss.
