Having saddled sprinter Lord Of The Sky to an agonizingly-close second in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes last weekend, trainer Robbie Laing is offered a great chance of going one better at the highest level on Saturday when Don Doremo takes to the stalls for the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick.
Posting a commendable race record of four wins and as many minor place finishes through just 12 competitive starts so far, Don Doremo has steadily built to the task this time; beating one runner home in minor over 1200m first-up and progressing to a credible third in the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) a fortnight ago.
Don Doremo was transferred to the care of Laing from Mike Moroney’s stables partway through the 2014 calendar and Cranbourne-based trainer is confident he is saddling a live chance in the 2015 Sydney Cup.
“We almost pulled it off in the TJ,” Laing said.
“Don Doremo is a promising stayer and is improving quickly this time around, so we might have a chance again.
“He is a big, old fashioned kind of kiwi stayer who will run all day and we set him for the race six months ago.
“The horses came to me in great order. Don Doremo is the big improver.
“I don’t know how he will handle a wet track but he’s got big feet and that’s usually a good sign.
“He should have won the Mornington Cup and I’m pretty sure he will have no problems with the 3200 metres.”
Completing several good performance in minor events early in the 2014 spring, Don Doremo failed to beat a runner home in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) on September 13th but continued to respond well to a continued step-up in distance; ending his campaign with success in the Market Square Shopping Centre BM78 (2400m) on October 22nd.
