The Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) is one of only two two-mile races running during the autumn carnival so it’s no surprise that 91 stayers have been nominated for the $1.6 million race at Royal Randwick Racecourse on April 11.
The Sydney Cup is one of eight races that make up The Championships – a lucrative meeting that covers the first two weekends in April – all of which closed their nominations on Monday afternoon.
Many of the big stayers from last spring are featured in the nominations, including perhaps the biggest – Protectionist. The five-year-old horse won the Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) last November in a race that truly stopped the nation.
After finding himself beyond midfield one off the fence, Protectionist looked to peel to the outside when full of running. He switched course inside and once in the clear put a massive margin on his rivals to win the $6.2 million race by four lengths.
Under the care of new trainer Kris Lees, Protectionist will be aimed towards the 2015 Sydney Cup during the autumn before potentially defending his Melbourne Cup title in the spring.
The Sydney Cup could turn into a Melbourne Cup redux with the majority of the 22 runners being nominated for April’s race, including runner-ups Red Cadeaux and Who Shot Thebarman.
The Ed Dunlop-trained Red Cadeaux broke a record of his own after finishing runner-up in the Melbourne Cup for the third times, making him the only horse to do so. For the first time ever, the British raider will travel to Australia outside of the spring as he’s set to tackle The Championships.
Who Shot Thebarman was a surprise third in the Melbourne Cup with a starting price of $21 at Ladbrokes.com.au but he managed a top staying effort after taking the inside run and battling away like he usually does. The six-year-old gelding also won the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) over two miles but was only a moderate ninth in last year’s Sydney Cup.
Peter Moody’s Au Revoir finished eighth in the Melbourne Cup on just his second start in Australia before going on to win the Group 2 Sandown Classic (2400m) on November 15.
Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) first and second Renew and Like A Carousel are also nominated for the race.
Other promising stayers nominated for the 2015 Sydney Cup include Darren Weir’s Akzar, Eight-year-old Green Moon, Chris Waller’s Junoob, Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) runner-up Permit, Donna Logan’s Rising Romance, and South Australia Derby (2500m) second Scratchy Bottom.
