Red Cadeaux has gained cult hero status in finishing second a record three times in the Melbourne Cup, and has been confirmed for a maiden Australian autumn campaign in 2015, geared towards the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on Day 2 of The Championships.
Finishing an agonizingly-close second to Dunaden in the 2011 Melbourne Cup, Red Cadeaux was unable to match the late pace of Green Moon when eighth in 2012, but has since placed second to Fiorente in 2013 and Protectionist in the most recent edition of the Race That Stops a Nation.
Revealing the Dubai Gold Cup was likely to figure as the veteran’s major target this time in, Racing Victoria’s International Recruitment Officer Leigh Jordan revealed trainer Ed Dunlop has confirmed Red Cadeaux will travel to Australia in autumn, contesting a line including the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) and Group 1 The BMW (2400m) before his major target, the Sydney Cup on April 11th.
“The horse entered quarantine at Newmarket in England on Friday and will arrive in Melbourne on 14 February where he’ll complete a mandatory quarantine period at the Werribee International Horse Centre,” Jordon told Racing Victoria.
“Although he has exclusively contested the two-mile Emirates Melbourne Cup in his four previous visits to Melbourne, Red Cadeaux has been placed in a Dubai World Cup over 2000m so we expect him to be ultra-competitive in the Australian Cup.
“Red Cadeaux has become such a popular horse in Australia via his heroic Melbourne Cup performances and we’re thrilled that Victorian racing fans will have the opportunity to see him campaign in Melbourne for a fifth time.”
Securing seven wins and a further 18 minor places over his impressive 48 start career so far, Red Cadeaux progressed to eighth in the Group 1 Japan Cup (2413m) following his 2012 Melbourne Cup eighth place finish before breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level in the major Group 1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m) on December 9th.
Continuing to post impressive results in the Middle East, Singapore, Japan and Britain on his way to the 2013 Melbourne Cup, the son of Cadeaux Genereux steadily built to the task over two starts prior to the 2014 Melbourne Cup; running fourth in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2671m) and seventh in the Group 3 September Stakes (2414m).
