A less-than capacity field of 17 has been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s major Sydney Cup (3200m); one of four Group 1 to be contested on day 2 of the inaugural The Championships at Royal Randwick.
Securing two consecutive victories in the lead up to week 2 of The Championships, The Offer has accepted a position in the final field for the 2014 Sydney Cup.
Quickly building to the task over four race starts this preparation, The Offer followed up a forgettable run for sixth in a minor event over 1400 metres with a good turn of foot to finish third in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) before claiming both the Group 2 NE Manion Cup (2400m) and Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) most recently.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse, who will also saddle Hippopus in the 2014 Sydney Cup, is confident of The Offer’s chances this weekend, particularly if allocated a favourable gate at this evening’s barrier draw.
Also included in the final field of the 2014 Sydney Cup is exciting up-and-comer Tupac Amaru.
Securing one win and five places from only ten race starts, Tupac Amaru has quickly risen to the task this season, following up two unlucky runs in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) and Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) with an impressive turn of foot to finish an unlucky second behind Criterion in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) last weekend.
Growing a name as a strong performer on wet tracks, trainer Peter Snowden was impressed by the way the Street Cry colt kicked late in the Australian Derby to chase a second attempt at victory, albeit unsuccessful.
Beginning her impressive racing career under the guidance of leading Irish trainer Dermot Weld, Voleuse De Coeurs has been be confirmed to make only her fourth appearance in Australia in the 2014 Sydney Cup.
Contesting a particularly strong and consistent preparation prior to landing on Australian shores, Voleuse De Coeurs won the Listed Coolmore Vintage Crop Stakes (2816m) and finished second in the Group 3 Irish St Leger Trial (2816m) most notably before strolling home to win the major Group 1 Irish St Leger (2816m) by more than six lengths.
While yet to claim a race win since arriving at Michael Moroney’s Randwick stables, the Teofilo mare finished a competitive fifth in both the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) and Group 1 The BMW (2400m) this preparation and will be more than a chance if allocated a favourable barrier.
Trainer Chris Waller will be offered double the chances of 2014 Australian Oaks success, having accepted positions in the final field of Brigantin and Opinion.
Securing six wins and 12 places from 33 race starts to date, Brigantin has returned to the track in good condition in 2014, finishing second in the Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) and third in the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) most notably.
Arguably offering Waller his best chance of success in the 2014 Sydney Cup, Opinion contested a strong five race preparation this time in, beating Queen Elizabeth Stakes favourite Carlton House to the line in the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900) before finishing second in both the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) and NE Manion Cup most notably.
The barrier draw for the 2014 Sydney Cup will be decided at a ceremony this evening (Tuesday).
