2014 Sydney Cup Barrier Draw

April 15th, 2014

The Barrier Draw for the 2014 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) has been completed, tossing up several interesting gates to leading chances for the race on day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick this weekend.

Having returned to the track in scintillating form this time in, The Offer will be given the chance to justify favouritism this weekend, having been allocated the central barrier 8 for the 2014 Sydney Cup.

Securing impressive victories on damp surfaces in the Group 3 NE Manion Cup (2400m) and Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) in his last two starts, The Offer has left from barrier 8 on two previous occasions; winning the Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) on November 22nd and finishing a competitive third from the central barrier in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) in his currently preparation.

A leading chance since running an unlucky second to Moment Of Change in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes first-up on February 22nd, Sertorius was arguably the biggest winner of all 2014 Sydney Cup leading chances, allocated the ideal barrier 3.

Leaving from barrier 3 in his impressive Futurity Stakes run, the Gelileo gelding won the Plumbtec Sale Cup Open (1600m) from barrier 3 in 2012 and finished an unlucky second when leaving from the gate in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) in March 2013.

Touted as a realistic threat to the 2014 Sydney Cup upon arriving in Australia in late 2013, Voleuse De Coeurs’ chances of success took a real hit when allocated the wide and awkward barrier 16.

While yet to claim a race win in three starts since arriving from the care of leading Irish trainer Dermot Weld for the 2013 Melbourne Cup, the Teofilo mare has quickly taken a liking to the Australian racing way of life and has experience overcoming poor draws; winning the Topaz Handicap (3218m) from barrier 18 in 2012.

Unable to make much of an impact in six race starts this preparation, Desert Jeuney was allocated the ideal barrier 1 for the 2014 Sydney Cup, while in-form five-year-old Tremec has been charged with the unenviable task over overcoming the wide barrier 17.
