Due to jump at 3:35pm (AEST) as Randwick Race 6 this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3220m) is shaping up as an intriguing clash with the Chris Waller-trained Kelinni to jump the early favourite.

Drawn in gate seven with Jim Cassidy to ride Kelinni is proven over the two mile Sydney Cup distance having run a very competitive fourth in the ‘race that stops a nation’ – the Melbourne Cup last year.

They went into the Melbourne Cup just three days after winning the Lexus Stakes and will be on another short back-up for the Sydney Cup 2013 having won the JRA Plate in the mud at Randwick last Saturday.

In the JRA Plate Kelinni carted a hefty 60kg to victory and will relish the drop back to 57kg on Saturday.

Second favourite in the early Sydney Cup odds after Kelinni is then the Hawkes-trained 2010 Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday who has drawn barrier one with Dwayne Dunn to ride.

The Zabeel six-year-old has been in good form this autumn running third in the Ranvet Stakes and then crossing only one and a half lengths away sixth to Fiveandahalfstar in The BMW with 59kg.

Dropping back to 56.5kg on Saturday Maluckyday should be very competitive over the two miles for the Sydney Cup.

Other early fancies to take out the cup classic this weekend are then the Gai Waterhouse-trained Julienas and Tremec drawn in gates 10 and nine respectively.

Imported Cape Cross six-year-old Julienas was a one-time favourite for the Sydney Cup after their back-to-back stakes wins in Sydney last month.

They lost top spot in the Sydney Cup betting markets however when bombing out last start to finish dead last in the Group 2 Chairman’s Stakes (2600m).

Winner of that race was Tremec who also backs up on Saturday, John Thompson’s classy Zabeel four-year-old after their third on the trot and their seventh from 16 career starts.

Also in the mix at juicier prices are the likes of veteran seven-year-old Mourayan, New Zealand Cup winner over the 3200m Blood Brotha who was second in the Chairman’s, Chairman’s third placegetter Aliyana Tilde and the defending Sydney Cup winner Niwot who appears out of form this autumn.

The complete 2013 Sydney Cup field, barrier draw, final weights and riders are all detailed below.
