Final Flat Test For Stand To Gain In 2012 Sydney Cup

April 24th, 2012

Stand To Gain will be having his final flat racing start when he runs in the Group 1 Sydney Cup this Saturday April 28, 2012.

The six-year-old gelding will then be moved from Chris Waller’s to Robert Smerdon’s stables where he will pursue a career in jumps racing.

Stand To Gain has been training with Smerdon for the past two weeks and early signs point to jumps racing success.

“He said he was a natural,” Waller said.

Waller still believes the gelding can win the Group 1 Sydney Cup this weekend.

“I’m hoping the change of scenery has helped sharpen him up for the Cup,” he said.

“He was due to have a trial at Cranbourne this morning to qualify for jumps racing but they were called off.

“He’s done plenty of jumping preparing for that so he’s certainly fit enough.

“Hawk Island has been a bit one-paced but I thought his run in the BMW was good.”

Waller will also line up Permit for the 2012 Sydney Cup, with the horse being one of the early favourites for the race.

“Everything has gone Permit’s way and fallen into place,” Waller said.

“He’s stepped up in class and performed each time and the luck has gone his way.

“Or maybe he’s the sort of horse who makes his own luck.”

Stand To Gain has won three of his 20 race starts and has earned more than $425,000 in prize money during his career.
